New York Hall of Science Program List

Fun With Bubbles

Description: Everywhere you look, bubbles can be found in our everyday lives-bubble gum, bubbles in soda, and air bubbles in a fish tank. Before visiting the exhibits, students will blow bubbles in water to observe how long they will retain their shape before they pop. The first exhibit the students visit, Soap Film Painting, demonstrates what colors can be seen reflecting off the surface of a bubble. The students will then blow bubbles in "bubble juice" to study what shape bubbles are, as well as reinforce what colors reflect off of their surface. At the Soap Films exhibit, the Virtual Visit instructor will experiment with different shaped bubble wands, illustrating the various shapes bubbles can take. Following Soap Films, the students will attempt to make different shaped bubbles using an assortment of bubble wands. They will find that no matter what shape they blow through, the bubbles will always take the shape of a sphere. At the concluding exhibit, Soap Bubbles, the Virtual Visit instructor will demonstrate how to make different sized bubbles.

Cost: $100.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: K-2

Chemistry Demonstration

Description: The Chemistry Demonstration focuses on the phase changes of matter. Students will see several live experiments that will explore these different phase changes with the help of liquid nitrogen. Examples include crushing a can without using your hands, making ice in less than thirty seconds, and taking away a balloons' elasticity.

Cost: $65.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 3-12

System Science: Intro to Networks

Description: System Science: Intro to Networks will introduce students to networks and systems of all kinds such as social, biological, and communication networks. We will also explore the fundamental structure of a network as well as benefits and uses for several networks. Students will also learn the difference between simple and complex networks. All topics introduced are paired with interactive exhibits that will be shown live on our museum floor.

Cost: $170.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 6-12

Laser Demonstration

Description: This interactive demonstration focuses on what a laser is, and how it is used in modern technology. Participants are first introduced to the differences between laser light and incandescent light. A laser light is also used to demonstrate the different properties of light. The other half of the demonstration will discuss various usages of lasers in our everyday life such as fiber optics and surgeries.

Cost: $65.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 4-9

Search for Life Beyond Earth

Description: Extremeophiles are microorganisms that have live and thrive in extreme conditions such as intense heat, arctic waters and methane lakes. These recently discovered hardy life forms might unlock the keys to imagining life on other planets. This program allows students to study Earth environments such as Atacama Desert in Chile or deep-sea smoker vents and learn about similar environments on places like Mars and the Jupiter moon, Europa. Students will learn the requirements for life, interact with the exhibits multimedia elements and extend these ideas in our post-visit project, ?Profile an Extremeophile!?

Cost: $170.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 5-10

Sophisticated Shadows

Description: In order to cast a shadow, three things are needed: a light source, an object to block the light, and a background for the shadow to land on. The first exhibit the students will visit, Recollections, demonstrates these three basic requirements for a shadow to be cast. At the Sophisticated Shadows exhibit, the Virtual Visit instructor will experiment with shadows, showing the students that shadows can be enlarged and reduced in size. While most people would describe a shadow's color as either "gray" or "black" at the Colored Shadows exhibit, the idea that shadows can actually be composed of many different colors will be explored. Before visiting the last exhibit, the students will try to guess what an object is by observing its shadow. At the concluding exhibit, Professor Pulfrich's Universe, the Virtual Visit instructor will reinforce that objects will only cast a two-dimensional shadow and that shadows are capable of movement.

Cost: $100.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: K-2

Magic and Science

Description: Remember as a child seeing your very first magic trick and being in complete awe of what happened. Wondering to yourself how in the world did he/she do that? Now with the help of The Great Osmosis and his magical laboratory, that wonder becomes knowledge. Be apart of an interactive scientific magic show and learn what exactly does magic and science have to do with each other.

Cost: $65.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: K-4

Illustrious Illusions: Secrets Revealed!

Description: Whether it being in a magic show or a movie we have all seen some form of illusions before but, what exactly is an illusion? Students will get the chance to see several optical illusions while make their own illusions. They will also investigate how the brain and eye interact to create an illusion.

Cost: $100.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: K-3

Hidden Kingdoms: The World of Microbes

Description: What is a microorganism? There are several different terms used to describe these organisms: microbe, germ, protist, protozoa, algae, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. A "microorganism" or "microbe" is any organism that is too small to see with a naked eye. This program introduces students to "Microspace" and allows them to begin to observe and classify its inhabitants. Student's will learn that microorganisms are omnipresent, existing literally everywhere and have an enormous impact upon the environment and humanity. Through hands on exploration with microscopes and the New York Hall of Science's Hidden Kingdoms microbe exhibit students can explore the world inside the microscope.

Cost: $170.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 4-9

Journey Inside the Eye

Description: Students will get the chance to engage in activities that will help them learn why we see color, what are cone cells, what exactly is a blind spot, and the answers to other questions that deal with your eye.
The culminating part of the program will show a live cow's eye dissection which will help the students see how certain parts like the iris and retina really look like.

Cost: $100.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 3-6

Mathematica: Beyond Numbers!

Description: Math is not just defined by numbers. It also involves patterns and relationships. Math is also considered the “Mother of all sciences” and is heavily used in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Students will learn hands-on the importance of Math with an assortment of activities dealing with Topology, Probability, and Chirality just to name a few. Students will also get the opportunity to design their own game show involving Math as a post-project.

Cost: $170.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 6-12

Math Midway

Description: The Math Midway features fun and challenging mathematical content at all levels from children to mathematicians. There is a range of unique exhibits, from square-wheeled tricycles that ride smoothly on a circular track of catenary arcs, to a plane of laser light that you can pass plastic polyhedra through to find their surprising cross sections. You can create unique pen and ink drawings to take home using the mechanical harmonograph. Or play with the "organ function grinder" in which you input a number, set a function, and turn the hand crank to generate both a numerical output and a unique calliope tune, which is transformed according to your function.

Cost: $65.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 3-6

Sports Challenge!

Description: Students explore the physical properties involved with athletic activity by engaging in table top experiments as well as interacting with a New York Hall of Science Explainer and exhibits. Investigate how different surfaces change how a ball bounces, the importance of muscle memory and why what kinds of balls travel the fastest.

Cost: $170.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 4-8
