Program: Mathematica: Beyond Numbers!

Provider: New York Hall of Science

Description: Math is not just defined by numbers. It also involves patterns and relationships. Math is also considered the “Mother of all sciences” and is heavily used in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Students will learn hands-on the importance of Math with an assortment of activities dealing with Topology, Probability, and Chirality just to name a few. Students will also get the opportunity to design their own game show involving Math as a post-project.

Cost: $170.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 6-12

Program: Math Midway

Provider: New York Hall of Science

Description: The Math Midway features fun and challenging mathematical content at all levels from children to mathematicians. There is a range of unique exhibits, from square-wheeled tricycles that ride smoothly on a circular track of catenary arcs, to a plane of laser light that you can pass plastic polyhedra through to find their surprising cross sections. You can create unique pen and ink drawings to take home using the mechanical harmonograph. Or play with the "organ function grinder" in which you input a number, set a function, and turn the hand crank to generate both a numerical output and a unique calliope tune, which is transformed according to your function.

Cost: $65.00 (SckDLN Schools)

Grades: 3-6

Program: Ani-Math

Provider: Indianapolis Zoo

Description: How do numbers fit into a zoo environment? We’ll talk about animal weights, heights, speeds, and other ways we use math at the Zoo…and you won’t believe how many pounds of fish we go through in a year!

Grade Level: K-8

Dates/Times: To view a list of dates/times this program is offered, click on the link and choose the month you are looking for. It lists all programs offered by the zoo, so look for Animath. Zoo Calendar

Cost: $70.00 (SckDLN schools)

LineUp for Math: Proportional Reasoning & Distance-Rate-Time Relationships in Air Traffic Control

Provider: NASA Distance Learning Network - Ames Research Center (California)

Description: Learn how your students can use a free web-based simulator and apply mathematics to explore and solve real-world problems in air traffic control. This professional development event will teach you how to use the simulator to apply proportional reasoning and distance-rate-time relationships to change plane routes and speeds to bring planes to an intersection safely and on time. A comprehensive collection of free instructional materials includes: the simulator, student workbooks, videos, teacher guides, answers and solutions.

Grade Level: Professional Development, Teachers for Grades 4-10

Dates/Times: By request (does not schedule before 11:00am CT...that is 8:00am PT)

Cost: Free!

Program: Boo-ti-ful Pumpkins

Provider: Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center

Description: Students will examine various math concepts in this "fall themed" video conference lesson. Usng a pumpkin, the presenter will facilitate an interactive student lesson on circumference and estimation. Student groups work collaboratively to explore the mathematic concepts and to explain their methods of achieving the answer. Appropriate literature is used to solidify the topics explored.

Grade Level: 2-3

Dates/Times: By request (Fall themed)

Cost: $75.00

Program: What Good is a Proabola Anyway?

Provider: Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial

Description: Students will examine how the Battleship New Jersey aimed the 16 inch guns with the assistance of a quadratic equation. These guns are capable of firing a 2000 pound projectile up to 23 miles and landing that shell within 30 yards of the intended target. This is amazing when one realizes that the equipment used to aim the guns was designed in the 1930's before GPS, digital computers, or Radar, and is still accurate enough to be used without change today. This is all accomplished with the use of parabolas which is also applied in this class to hands-on activities such as a quarterback throwing a football or a batter hitting a baseball. A video segment which demonstrates the 16 inch guns in action, 360 degree looks at applicable areas of the ship, as well as a life-size replica of an actual shell (over 5ft. tall!) serve to enhance the educational experience.

Grade Level: 9-12

Dates/Times: By request

Cost: $80.00 (SckDLN schools)

Program: Patterns Matter: Symmetry, Patterns, Tessellation

Provider: Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts

Description: In this program upper elementary and middle school students will gain a sense of patterns, symmetry, and tessellation through visuals, exercises, and thought provoking discussions that investigate and demonstrate these concepts in art and in use in the real world in a way that makes them meaningful to students trying to grasp these mathematical concepts.

Grade Level: 4-8

Dates/Times: By request

Cost: $75.00 (SckDLN schools)

Program: Mathematical Visions - Secondary Level

Provider: Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts

Description: Various works of visual art are effectively used to illustrate mathematical concepts at a more advanced level than that of the primary level class. Geometry, grids, patterns, symmetry, scale, proportion, topology, golden ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence are investigated through the artworks.

Grade Level: 7-12

Dates/Times:By request

Cost: $75.00 (SckDLN schools)
